Born in Beirut in 1960, Charif Majdalani is a Lebanese writer, novelist, and professor. After pursuing his studies at Université de Provence, in France, he completed his PhD thesis in 1993. He is a professor at Saint-Joseph University of Beirut, where he was the dean of the French Literature Department from 1999 to 2008. Between 2005 and 2025, he published ten novels and two essays in French. His debut novel, Histoire de la grande maison (2005), was shortlisted for the Renaudot, Femina, Médicis, and Wepler prizes, while Caravansérail (2007) won both the Tropiques Prize and the French Academy’s François Mauriac Prize. His most recent novel, Le Nom des Rois (2025), was shortlisted for the Goncourt Prize. Majdalani is a member of the L’Orient littéraire’s editorial board, a columnist for the French daily newspaper La Croix, and the president of the International Writers’ House in Beirut.
