At Assouline, the culture of a place is never defined by geography alone, but by the rituals that give it life, what we taste, where we gather, what we see, and how we feel when we return. For decades, this philosophy has shaped our Travel Series Collection, inviting readers to discover destinations through the eyes of those who know them most intimately. In this ongoing Culture Lounge series, we turn to the voices behind our books to reveal the personal landscapes that continue to inspire them.
For Jamaica-based editor and author of Jamaica Vibes, Novia McDonald‑Whyte, Jamaica isn't just a destination, it's a feeling. The author behind Assouline's Jamaica Vibes has spent a lifetime immersed in the island's bluest seas, blazing sun, and unmistakable energy. As a trusted guide to one of the Caribbean's most vibrant and soulful destinations, she shares the local haunts and everyday rituals that bring Jamaica to life.
Tell us about your earliest memory of Jamaica:
The endless blue skies, the bluest sea imaginable, the radiant heat, and an energy that feels unmatched.
What is one place visitors wouldn’t think of going to, but absolutely should?
Stush in the Bush in St Ann, an incredible farm-to-table dining experience.
I feel most at home when I go to:
My love affair started with Round Hill Hotel and Villas two decades ago. The relaxed vibe, the Ralph Lauren design, the organic flair, their afternoon tea. I could go on and on!
A place I go to relax when I have a day off:
The Face Place Spa in Kingston. My favorite treatments would be Spa mani and pedi as nails must always be perfect. And the weekly Repechage facials keep my skin plump and glowing.
When I want a dose of culture, I visit:
The National Gallery of Jamaica! It houses a great collection of artifacts, modern, and contemporary Jamaican Art. Some artists featured include Albert Huie and Edna Manley.
The hotel I recommend to everyone:
Half Moon Hotel is another favorite place. The best rooms and great bellmen. Be sure to get dinner at the multi-award winning Sugar Mill restaurant, it is a must!
The one dish first-time visitors should try:
A piping-hot Tastee Patty, a staple food spot in Jamaica, available at any Tastee outlet across the island.
My favorite place to shop and discover local vendors:
Locale Concept Store. My favorite designer there is Korto Momolu, her pieces guarantee attention! I also love Island Magnolia boutique at Round Hill, it is a treasure trove of exquisite Caribbean designs like Meiling and The Cloth. For runway ready looks, I recommend Resortwear by Eroleen.
Describe Jamaica in three words:
Home of Jah. Rastafari.
