GAME ROOM FAQ

Game Room is the second chapter of the Library Collection, Assouline’s world of objects for the contemporary library. It gathers five games: the Empire Chess Set, the Pebble Backgammon Set, the Pebble Domino Set, the Pebble Playing Card Set and the Library Tic-Tac-Toe, each reimagined in walnut, pebbled leather and brushed brass as an object of design.

The pebble form used throughout the Library Collection takes its inspiration from the Assouline name, which is rooted in Moroccan tradition and linked to words meaning rock or pebble. Across Game Room, it lends its name to the Pebble Backgammon, Domino and Playing Card Sets and its shape to the signature handle of the Pebble Domino Set.

The Empire Chess Set looks at one of history’s greatest games through a contemporary lens. Its sculptural aluminum pieces, led by a queen inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat, rise from an inlaid pebbled leather board set within walnut and brushed brass, a composition to admire long after checkmate.

Yes. The Empire Chess Set is conceived for serious play as much as for display. The board’s finish and materials are chosen for handling the pieces, and each sculptural aluminum piece sits comfortably in the hand, with a well-judged weight. Pieces glide smoothly across the board without unsettling their neighbors, even in a timed game, while the brushed brass border lends every match its elegance.

Yes. Game Room offers distinctive gifts for board game enthusiasts, collectors and hosts, including for weddings, housewarmings and anniversaries. Each piece arrives ready to give in its own presentation box, finished in textured paper, with an interior molded to the shape of the object so it travels safely. Assouline’s Gift Concierge can also help with gift selection.

Named by ELLE Decor among the most elegant board games of 2025, the Pebble Backgammon Set carries a game played for five thousand years. Walnut, inlaid leather and brushed brass come together in its case and board, with leather checkers and hand-painted dice, a set as striking on display as it is in play.

The Second Chapter of the Library Collection

For Assouline, the contemporary library has always been a sanctuary of beauty, culture and shared passions, a place where books and objects hold a conversation of their own. Game Room, the second chapter of the Library Collection, brings play into that conversation. Chess, backgammon, dominoes, cards and tic-tac-toe have gathered friends and families across centuries and cultures. Here, each is reimagined through Assouline’s point of view: made to be lived with, played often and kept in view long after the final round.

A Dialogue Between Play and Design

Each game carries a detail that could only come from Assouline. The pebble, a form inspired by the Assouline name itself, recurs throughout, from the Pebble sets to the signature handle that crowns the Pebble Domino Set. The Empire Chess Set presents a queen inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat. Inside the Pebble Playing Card Set, the court cards nod to the Assouline family and the joker juggles books, while the Library Tic-Tac-Toe shapes its Os as miniature volumes. These are games of wit and culture, revealed one round at a time.

Made by Hand, Made to Be Shared

Every piece is individually handmade by a skilled artisan, worked in the materials that define the Library Collection: custom pebbled leather, warm walnut, softly brushed brass and a polysuede base that protects the surface beneath. Conceived as heirlooms, they bring the art of gifting to the table, for the host, the collector and the player alike.
