A Dialogue Between Craft and Space

From hosting artist residencies to enriching exhibits, the Art in Resonance program is the natural evolution of The Peninsula Hotels’ affinity for the arts.

Over the years, The Peninsula Hotels has carved a distinctive path that elevates the guest’s experience; accommodations are merely the canvas for more knowledge, allowing them to feel like a home away from home. As you step inside any of the 12 properties around the world, you'll encounter something memorable. Art lines the walls, sculptures are positioned to catch the eye of guests, and installations transform spaces into immersive cultural experiences.

Through Art in Resonance, an innovative program established in 2019, the brand has demonstrated itself to be a purposeful cultural stage. The Peninsula Hotels provides funding and curatorial support rather than simply acquiring art pieces; Art in Resonance allows selected artists to produce significant new public works. For instance, Chinese contemporary textile artist Lin Fanglu's piece She's Bestowed Love explores the traditions of Chinese ethnic minorities and the tie-dye techniques of Bai women in Yunnan. Her work will travel from The Peninsula Hong Kong to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, serving as a centerpiece for the museum's "Dimensions: Chinese Contemporary Studio Crafts" exhibition.

“These artists reflect the culture of their respective cities and global cultural ecosystem; our aim is to bring these artists and their works to a wider community. says Carson Glover, senior vice president of brand marketing and communications at Peninsula Hotels. "Through the program, we celebrate our passion for the arts and aim to provide guests and visitors with a truly memorable experience that goes above and beyond simply displaying art.”

The Art in Resonance program distinguishes itself from other hotel art initiatives by focusing on emerging and mid-career artists, specifically those with remarkable talent but lacking a platform to reach larger audiences. The Peninsula Chicago's current Art in Resonance exhibition, for example, features works from the Bill and Christy Gautreaux Collection, highlighting the hotel's focus on women and artists of color, including Cuban printmaker Belkis Ayón, sculptor Nick Cave, and painter Sam Gilliam. The exhibition connects to the creative communities established in the American locations of The Peninsula Hotels. Meanwhile, The Peninsula Tokyo's 2024 residency with Japanese calligrapher Maaya Wakasugi  offered "specially curated interactive programs for guests" that reflect Japanese artistic traditions.

As Art in Resonance enters its sixth year, it has established a template for how luxury hospitality can meaningfully engage with culture - one that embodies the hospitality brand’s dedication to providing guests with not just a place to stay but a journey that lingers.
