Room with a View: the Commodore Suite

At The Boca Raton’s Yacht Club, President and CEO Daniel Hostettler opens the doors to a suite where nautical heritage and refined elegance meet seamlessly.

Imagined by visionaries with dreams of fanciful indulgences across two hundred acres, The Boca Raton has emerged as more than simply a destination; it’s become an icon. Courtesy of The Boca Raton.

Founded in 1926 by architect Addison Mizner, The Boca Raton was never simply a hotel; it was a vision. His signature Moorish and Mediterranean Revival architecture still lives in the cloisters and arches that define the property today, a century-old foundation layered over time with contemporary luxury without ever losing its soul. Each hotel within the resort has its own distinct personality, yet a common thread runs through them all: a sense of craft, permanence, and place. Guests feel it the moment they arrive.

Nowhere is that spirit more quietly distilled than at the Yacht Club. Adults-only by design, it moves at a different rhythm than the broader resort: unhurried, refined, and deeply connected to the 32-slip marina at its doorstep. This year, that distinction earned it Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star recognition, while guests also enjoy exclusive access to the private pool at Spa Palmera, offering an even greater remove from the outside world.

At the very top of the Yacht Club sits the Commodore Suite, a name that, according to President and CEO Daniel Hostettler, was never in question. “The title of ‘Commodore’ is the highest honor within a traditional yacht club, the elected leader of the fleet, so to speak. It felt like the natural name for our flagship suite. It’s aspirational, steeped in nautical tradition, and signals to guests that they are not simply staying in a suite, but occupying the most distinguished address in the Club.”

Redesigned in 2024 by the resort’s in-house team, the suite was guided by a single brief: guests should walk in and immediately understand where they are. The result honors the Yacht Club’s maritime identity while remaining entirely of the present. It is not a themed space, but one that seems to have arrived at its aesthetic naturally. Shades of blue move throughout, from the inky tones of open water to softer coastal hues that catch the light off the Intracoastal beyond the windows. High-gloss woods evoke the warmth of teak and mahogany aboard a classic yacht, creating a palette that feels both sophisticated and wholly at home in its surroundings.

In the living room, rattan armchairs offer a subtle nod to coastal living, evoking warmth, ease, and the unhurried elegance that defines Florida’s finest design heritage. Small model yachts, placed throughout the suite, feel less like decoration than memory: quiet reminders of Lake Boca Raton’s long history as a social harbor, of the catamarans that pass through the marina each weekend, and of the maritime culture that still shapes life here.

What surprises guests most, however, is what lies beyond the suite itself. Nearly 900 square feet of furnished outdoor living unfolds outside: a lounge area, dining table for six, chaise longues, and a covered trellis that creates a room within a room. “The moment you step onto that terrace and take in the full panorama of the marina, the Intracoastal, and the Atlantic beyond,” says Hostettler, “everything else recedes.”
