Art Through Europe, Before It Slips Away

From Hockney’s luminous landscapes in Paris to Leigh Bowery’s vivid spectacle in London, six must-see exhibitions across Europe close in late August. A fleeting season of art, waiting to be wandered.

As the last weeks of summer unfold, Europe offers one final invitation: to wander through its museums, galleries, and repurposed spaces before the season—and these exhibitions—slip away. The Assouline guide maps a path through six destinations. Whether it’s Basquiat’s alluring use of color in Monte Carlo or Cézanne’s exceptional vision of home, each stop reveals a different facet of creativity and beauty—while it lasts.

IMMERSIVE

Paris, France

David Hockney 25, Fondation Louis Vuitton

This exceptional exhibition brings together more than 400 works spanning from 1955 to 2025, drawn from the artist’s studio, his foundation, and an array of private and institutional international loans. “This exhibition means an enormous amount because it is the largest exhibition I've ever had," assures the British painter. Oil paintings, ink, pencil, and charcoal drawings, as well as digital works, make up this extraordinary journey. Fondation Louis Vuitton, until September 1, 2025.

ECCENTRIC

London, England

Leigh Bowery!, Tate Modern

He was an artist, a model, a performer, as much as he was a musician and a symbol of extravagance. Muse of the painter Lucian Freud, and an essential figure of the London and New York nightlife during the 1990s, Bowery has notably influenced many, including Lady Gaga, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, and John Galliano. The icon is now the subject of a very queer retrospective tribute at the Tate Modern. Tate Modern, until August 31, 2025.

POP

Monte Carlo

Couleurs!, Grimaldi Forum Monaco

The works of Sonia Delaunay, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, and others are brought together in an extraordinary chromatic immersion—a pop plunge into pure color that never ceases to defy boredom and uniformity. Couleurs!, Grimaldi Forum Monaco, until August 31.

NATURALIST

Aix-en-Provence, France

Cézanne au Jas de Bouffan, Museé Granet

This international exhibition, which takes place in Paul Cézanne’s former home of  almost 40 years, magnifies the artist's vision through more than 130 works—from still life to portraits of card players. For this retrospective, the Jas de Bouffan, with its 15-hectare park, once again becomes the dreamlike and inspiring setting of the artist who described the Louvre as “the book where we learn to read." According to Cézanne, “We must not be content to memorize the beautiful phrases of our illustrious predecessors without also understanding them. Let us go out to study beautiful nature, let us try to extract its spirit, let us seek to express ourselves according to our temperament."

TRANSATLANTIC

Deauville, France

Deep Blue, the Ocean Revealed, Les Franciscaines

From storms to red coral seabed and mythical jellyfish creatures, painted by Odilon Redon, Deep Blue, the Ocean Revealed, emerges under the gaze of the brilliant curator Jean de Loisy. This exhibition is a voyage that unites, in a single wave, Gustave Moreau, Victor Hugo, Émile Gallé, Damien Hirst, Jean Painlevé and Raymond Depardon—not to mention unexpected contributions such as those of navigator Isabelle Autissier and photographer Luz Moreno.

UNUSUAL

Kristiansand, Norway

Kunstsilo

Kunstsilo opened a year ago in a former grain silo built in 1935 on the small island of Odderøya, Norway. It resembles a museum in a cathedral with 30 of its exterior silos reaching 41-meters high.  The current exhibition, Cosmic Dimensions, “highlights the spiritual sides of humanity as an alternative to a conflict-driven present.” The museum itself is an extraordinary model of functionalist architecture; the art patron and financier Nicolai Tangen donated the world's largest collection of Nordic modernist art. Between the rooftop and the brand new Kilden Theater and Concert Hall, it's an opportunity to discover cultural innovation in Southern Norway.
