Featuring sculptural bookends, a collector’s bookstand, backgammon set and essentials that reflect the highest level of craftsmanship, the collection brings a tactile elegance to the contemporary home library.

For Assouline, a book is never just a book—it’s an experience, a gateway to culture, and a design object in its own right. Now, with the debut of the Library Collection, we’re invited to reimagine the world around the book. Featuring sculptural bookends, a collector’s bookstand, backgammon set and essentials that reflect the highest level of craftsmanship, the collection brings a tactile elegance to the contemporary home library. Thoughtfully crafted in rich materials like leather, walnut wood, and brass, each piece is a reflection of Assouline’s design DNA: timeless, refined, and rooted in storytelling.

We sat down with Assouline president, Alex Assouline to learn more about the inspiration behind the new collection, how it connects to the brand’s cultural ethos, and what’s next for the future of Assouline interiors.

What inspired the creation of the new Library Collection, and how does it reflect Assouline’s vision of the modern home library?

We envisioned a space that elevates the entire reading experience—a contemporary library complete with objects that bring depth, warmth, and elegance. These are pieces we use every day in our own homes and offices. Crafted in leather, wood, and brass—materials that speak to Assouline’s identity—they’re designed to complement our books, not compete with them. The result is a curated sanctuary for culture and contemplation.

Each item in the collection—from the magnifying glass to the hourglass—feels both timeless and purposeful. How did you approach the design and curation of these objects?

Every object has a story—and a function. Martine uses the loupe daily when selecting images for our spreads; I keep an hourglass on my desk as a quiet reminder that so much can be accomplished in an hour. Even the backgammon set is a nod to the idea that a library isn’t only for quiet reflection, but for interaction, joy, and play. These pieces invite people to engage with their surroundings—they’re not just beautiful, they’re lived with.

Assouline is known for celebrating culture through beautifully crafted books. How does the Library Collection extend or complement the storytelling that lives within your titles?

The library, for us, is a sanctuary of culture—and this collection amplifies that. The objects bring texture and dimension to the space around the books, helping reduce visual clutter while drawing attention to the titles themselves. We chose rich, warm tones—never overly bright—to create harmony with the books. Even our bookstand is designed to display a page you love, almost like a work of art.

In an increasingly digital world, what role do you think physical books—and the spaces we create around them—still play in our daily lives?

Books create meaningful connections. They’re conversation starters, vehicles of knowledge, and time machines to other cultures, eras, and perspectives. Our mission has always been to celebrate the beliefs, artistry, and heritage of the subjects we explore. Creating a beautiful space for books invites people to slow down, to learn, to reflect—and ultimately, to shape their own worldview.

Were there any historical influences or personal memories that shaped the design of the pieces in this collection?

Absolutely. Many of the designs stem from moments of discovery—like the Twist bookend, inspired by a sculpture Prosper found at a Paris flea market. We refined its form through many prototypes until it felt just right. Materials like walnut, brass, and leather have long been part of our visual language. The pebble motif throughout the collection draws from the name Assouline itself, which has Moroccan roots linked to "rock" or "pebble." This organic, grounding form expresses quiet strength and heritage.

Even our iconic “A” has a story: it was born during a trip to Asia, where a Shanghai artisan engraved the letter into a stone stamp. That mark, once pressed in wax on our packages, has become a symbol of our devotion to craft, culture, and timeless design.

What do you hope people feel or experience when they use these objects in their homes or offices?

We hope they feel inspired to celebrate their most beloved books—and proud to display them. These objects are designed to elevate a space, but also to bring joy and meaning. When you’re surrounded by beautiful things that serve a purpose, there’s an emotional lift. It’s almost like a chemical reaction—beauty that you feel, not just see.

What’s next for how you’d like the brand to build out interiors and home library objects?

Our vision is expansive. We want to create everything that belongs in a contemporary library—from objects and games to cigar accessories and even furniture. We're also developing bespoke library design services, where we’ll curate not just books, but objects, art, and even millwork. Soon, you’ll find vintage and one-of-a-kind items in our boutiques—sourced from auctions by Prosper—that pair beautifully with our modern pieces. We’re also exploring home fragrances and new colorways. It’s about cultural depth, discovery, and creating spaces that reflect the sophistication and soul of the Assouline world.
