The father-child bond carries its own quiet beauty—one of strength, tenderness, and enduring presence. Photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank set out to celebrate that connection in her latest book with Assouline, Father and Child.

From artists and designers to athletes, screenwriters, and cultural icons, Frank photographed fathers across a range of disciplines, united by a shared devotion to their children. “I wanted to choose fathers leaving a mark on this cultural moment,” says Swanson Frank. “These men are not only shaping their fields, but are passionate about fatherhood and deeply committed to honoring that role.”

Initially, Swanson Frank imagined this project as a departure from her earlier work. But as Father and Child came to life, she found herself returning to the aesthetic and emotional language that shaped her debut book, Mother and Child. What began as a creative shift ultimately became a companion volume—two books in dialogue, each reflecting the soulful bond between parent and child.

With Father and Child, Frank offers families a mirror in which to recognize their own stories, told through gestures, glances, and shared presence. “My hope is that when you open the book, you take a journey filled with meaning and joy,” she says. “That you feel something. That you hear these fathers’ stories—each one different, each one familiar—and see your own spirit reflected there.”
