The discerning traveler knows that autumn offers what other times of the year cannot: destinations in their truest forms. Without summer's crowds or winter's limitations, fall invites more profound experiences while nature’s beauty is at its peak. As the temperature cools down, cities across the globe celebrate with festivals passed down through generations. From the Scottish Highlands steeped in artistic lore to Kyoto's historic parade set against red-colored maples, these cities represent travel as it should be—transformative, timely, and touched by seasonal magic.

Jaipur, India

The fall offers ideal weather for exploring the Pink City's attractions. Visit the iconic Amber Fort and Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds), then wander through the vibrant bazaars of Johari and Bapu for textiles, jewelry, and handmade crafts. The cooler evenings are perfect for enjoying traditional Rajasthani cuisine at rooftop restaurants while soaking in views of the palaces and forts.

We recommend: Bissau Palace, overlooking the Tiger Fort.

Zürich, Switzerland

Creative minds will discover endless inspiration as Zürich evolves into a creative hub throughout Zurich Design Weeks, running September 4-14. Centered around the Design Biennale Zürich in the picturesque Old Botanical Garden, the event showcases innovative exhibitions, interactive workshops, and cutting-edge creations from both global and regional talent.

We recommend: La Réserve Eden au Lac Zurich, just steps away from Lake Zürich.

Hoshinoya Kyoto: A luxury ryokan where every room offers stunning views of the Oi River, nestled in the historic Arashiyama district that has enchanted visitors since the Heian period. Courtesy of Hoshino Resorts featured in Kyoto Serenity by Assouline.

Kyoto, Japan

Every October 22, Kyoto hosts the Jidai Matsuri, known as the "Festival of Ages," to celebrate the city's rich history. The festival features a grand procession that travels from the Imperial Palace to Heian Jingu Shrine, bringing Kyoto’s cultural heritage to life through elaborate costumes and ceremonial displays.

We recommend: Hoshinoya Kyoto, set on the Katsura River.

Scottish Highlands, United Kingdom

Scotland's literary history is shaped by luminaries such as Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. During September 26-28, that truth comes alive at The Fife Arms in Braemar, which presents the fourth annual Braemar Literary Festival, a festivity to celebrate Scottish literature and the creative arts.

We recommend: The Fife Arms, nestled in a 19th-century hunting lodge on the banks of Clunie Water.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Each Sunday, the Mataderos neighborhood transforms into the Feria de Mataderos, a vibrant celebration of Argentina’s gaucho heritage. Live music, folkloric dance, and the scent of regional dishes fill the streets, while stalls overflow with handcrafted goods, offering an authentic window into the nation’s traditions.

We recommend: Faena Buenos Aires, a chic converted warehouse in Puerto Madero.
