Colonial Charm and Aged Excellence: The Zacapa Experience

High in the mountains of Antigua, Guatemala, this amber spirit embodies generations of masterful blending and tradition.

Zacapa was never just a bottle in our house; it was a signal. When one appeared on the counter, something worth celebrating was already underway. My father's birthday. The end of Christmas Eve dinner. Old friends showing up unannounced. I wasn't a rum drinker back then, but my family had opinions firm enough for all of us. Zacapa was the best, full stop. 

It took years before I actually made it to Guatemala. The flight into Guatemala City, then an hour by road to Antigua, the landscape shifting into something that felt older and quieter. Colonial façades, cobblestones, and quiet streets. But the reason I was there was Lorena Vásquez. Thirty-five years as Zacapa's Master Blender, a career built somewhere between chemistry and gut feeling. She's direct and unassuming, the kind of person who lets the work speak for itself. She took me through each Zacapa expression one by one: the No. 23, the one I'd grown up seeing at family gatherings; the Edición Negra, noticeably bolder and darker; and the XO — dark chocolate, dried cherry, coffee, grapefruit skin and French oak. Three very different rums, and yet you can tell they all came from the same person.

A visit to Antigua reveals the obsession behind what ends up in the glass. The barrels alone tell a story: American White Oak that once held whiskey, European Oak carrying traces of Cognac and Sherry, each one chosen for what it's already absorbed. Vásquez draws from all of them, layering casks through a process inspired by the Sistema Solera method, a slow blending where no single harvest dominates, and the rum becomes something accumulated over time rather than produced in a single pass. She's selecting for flavor, aroma, texture, even color. 

Zacapa turns fifty this year, and standing in Antigua, that number means something. Half a century of harvests, of barrels sourced and blended, of a small Guatemalan city producing something the rest of the world has come to recognize as excellent. The place stays with you: a valley watched over by three volcanoes, a city most people haven't thought of visiting, yet they should. Antigua has a way of sticking around long after you've left, and now I know why.
